Liquid is pumped through tubes at controlled velocities to provide a high rate of heat transfer, rapid evaporation and high concentration without requiring high operating temperatures or large heating surfaces. Since no boiling occurs in the tubes, fouling is reduced or eliminated. Main applications are in the concentration of inversely soluble materials, crystallizing, and concentration of thermally degradable materials. Common uses are for caustic soda, waste streams and inorganic acids.
